When you’ve been sedentary for a while, learning how to make exercise a daily habit may not be as obvious as it sounds. Just saying “go for a walk every day” is easy. However, working it into your regular schedule when you’re feeling exhausted and unmotivated can present quite the challenge.
Being able to make exercise a daily habit takes planning and dedication as well as motivation. It can be challenging, but knowing the right techniques to work it into your life can make a significant difference in being able to overcome that challenge.
Use the following tips and techniques to make exercise a daily habit in your life. They will help you to fit it in and stick with it, so you can benefit from all the advantages of being regularly active.
· Participate in several activities – If you repeat the exact same activity every day, you’re going to get bored. Even if that activity is something you typically enjoy, it will get old pretty fast when you’re forcing yourself to do it on most days of the week. Instead, mix things up. Walk on certain days, swim on certain days, hit the gym, or even participate in a team sport. Find lots of activities that you enjoy and try to participate in several of them.
· Take advantage of the season – Let the weather keep your regular exercising interesting. In the summer, go for challenging walks along the beach in the sand. In the winter, strap on some snowshoes and give regular walking a bit of oomph (you’ll be surprised to learn that if you can walk, you can snowshoe. The learning curve is tiny!).
· Get a buddy – If you have trouble motivating yourself, then buddy up with someone else. You’ll soon discover that you’ll go because you won’t want to let that person down, and they’ll do the same thing. Moreover, once you’re out there, you’ll find that you’ll enjoy the activity a lot more. A brisk walk goes a lot faster when you’re chatting with someone than it does when you’re on your own.
· Decide that exercise is a priority – Make the conscious decision that doing your daily workout is not negotiable. It’s happening. Regardless of whether you’re going for a run, doing some strength training with hand weights or stretching with yoga, you need to do it on busy days, calm days and even when you’re travelling.
